The Basics of Archery Bow Making

from: Maxx Sports Guides

If you enjoy the sport of archery, then you may want to get into the craft of archery bow making. Taking up this interesting hobby starts with learning the basics of archery bow making.

Archery bow making takes patience and dedication. A lot of people assume is easy to make bows. However, it takes a certain amount of talent and skill to produce a quality bow. However, if you're able to master the craft of archery bow making, the rewards are great. You can just imagine hunting down game with a bow you made yourself.

When getting into the craft, you'll need to know about the materials needed for constructing a bow. There are actually a several materials you can use including ash, yew wood, or bamboo wood. Your choice here depends on your personal preference, but yew wood is commonly used for bows.

In addition, you'll also be needing tools including a sharp knife, an axe, a piece of unflawed yew wood and string. Make sure your string isn't the kind that's too stretchy because these don't make for a good bow.

Carve your wood so it appears somehow like a boomerang. Then wax the string, and for this, rawhide works well. Waxing should be done so the string is protected from the elements it will encounter. You should also carve two notches at the end of your bow, looping the string at each end. Make sure the string is tight enough so it has enough power to shoot arrows at a distance. Strings that are too loose or too stretchy won't let you shoot off decent arrows.

It definitely requires some know-how and skill to master archery bow making. Try constructing a bow of your own to see if you have a knack for it. If you find it too difficult, then you can just go ahead and buy one of the commercial bows available.
