Traditional Archery

from: Maxx Sports Guides

During the early years of mankind, in order to survive, he began creating tools for hunting for food and as weapons to protect themselves during warfare. The bow and arrow was among on of these tools. Throughout history, archery has played a significant role. Currently, archery has become a sport enjoyed for recreational purposes rather than a way to make a living.

Studies have shown that Man first used the bow and arrow for hunting more than 5,000 years ago. During this time, Man began to develop traditional archery. Later, during the "Medieval Period", the traditional form of archery was used during most battles, wars and conflicts all over the world.

Traditional archery is now not for warfare, but for sports, recreation and hunting. The competitive form of traditional archery is gradually fading away because of the modern archery equipment now used in almost all types of archery competitions. Unlike traditional archery wherein the archer only used a bow and arrow, modern archery uses more sophisticated, "state of the art" gear and equipment. Modern archery is a lot more accurate than traditional.

Traditional forms of archery are practiced mostly by people who like to hunt game using traditional archery equipment. Although bow hunting is considered as a traditional form of archery, it also uses several modern gear and equipment such as protective equipment including arm guards (or "bracers"), chest guards, gloves etc. This protective equipment provides bot protection along with helping an archer improve his or her accuracy.

Although modern and traditional forms of archery have several differences, they also share some similarities. These similarities are the bow and arrow. Even though modern archery equipment is more efficient, the fundamentals are basically the same -- hitting the target as accurately as possible.

Whatever form, be it traditional or modern archery, it's one of the oldest sports. Although, during its history, it wasn't used as a sport but a weapon. The basics of traditional archery have improved due to innovations in technology. This means traditional archery will never disappear but will just continue to improve.
