What are Extreme Sports?

from: Maxx Sports Guides

So what exactly are extreme sports? What makes them extreme, and what sports are considered extreme? Here are some examples of what's considered an extreme sports.

Loosely defined, extreme sports are newer sports that require a certain level of danger plus exhilaration. There's usually a combination of speed, danger, often height as well as the performance of stunts. Anyone addicted to these sports are usually addicted to the adrenaline rush that goes with them. Here are some specific examples.

One of the best-known extreme sports is skateboarding. During the mid 1960’s a short film introduced to the mainstream the sport of skateboard riding. There was soon a national championship competition which got everyone's attention. Competitors started jumping out of man-made "half pipes," ramps, as well as rails and stairs. Skateboarding became associated with rebellion and trouble. However, these days, like many extreme sports, skateboarding has gained mainstream acceptance. Competitions are now international and have been included in the Olympics and other worldwide athletic competitions.

Related to skateboarding is snowboarding, which is basically skateboarding on snow. The stunts and tricks are quite similar, and like skateboarding, the sport has now caught on internationally. Everywhere on the ski slopes of America and throughout the world, you'll find snowboarders. Some ski resorts have started building snowboard trick areas.

Sports climbing is another extreme sport that may be for a more mature group. Sports climbing is a type of mountain or rock climbing in which you're supplied with handgrips and a route that you must climb. This extreme sport isn't so much about the adventure, but more about athleticism and climbing strength.

BMX biking is an extreme bicycle sport that can go a couple of ways. There's BMX bike racing with competitors racing around a track with dirt jumps, hills, and even obstacles as they compete with other racers around the track. Another version of BMX is freestyle bike competitions where competitors use their bikes in a similar manner to the way a snowboarder or skateboarder uses their board. Stunts and tricks are performed on obstacles and ramps.

You can add freestyle skiing to your growing list of extreme sports. This is the type of skiing where obstacles are used to perform stunts as the skiers come down the slope. They may do a jump, spin, or flip depending on the specific competition. Another type of freestyle skiing takes place on moguls where the competitors go over the moguls to perform stunts on larger jumps so they can increase their points as they navigate the slope.

Skydiving is not so much about competition but is a very popular extreme sport where participant jump from an airplane and after a period of free falling, they release a parachute to slow down and fall softly back to earth. The real appeal of sky diving is the danger in the initial jump. Some skydivers work in teams to create shapes and choreography during the freefall before their chutes are released. This is the competition part of skydiving and it's an extreme sport that's becoming more popular everywhere.

Since new and better competitions keep showing up all over the world, its clear that the extreme sport craze is the new fad. Even younger kids are starting to participate and competitions are cojnstantly increasing in popularity. From skateboarding, to snowboarding, extreme skiing, skydiving, hang gliding, abd even rollerblading, these sports are going to be around for a long time.
