Kids Attraction to Extreme Sport
from: Maxx Sports GuidesIt appears as if the kids these days are really getting into extreme sports, including kids as young as early elementary school. You might wonder if this could be problem -- or a blessing. This will probably depend on whom you ask, but a deeper examination of extreme sports should shed some light on the situation.
Have you noticed that the TV in your living room is now gathering dust while the video game system is also sitting in the corner being totally ignored. This may have been exactly what you wanted all along, but it could be an indication that your child is heavily into extreme sports. Don't let the name fool you, because the name extreme sports is used to describe many different activities. However, for kids, it's most likely BMX biking, or skateboarding, or trickblading, which is performing tricks on specially made roller blades.
A trickblader uses a special type of roller blades with smaller but thicker wheels, wider boots, and what's called a grind plate that allows them to slide across surfaces when desired. These blades are made so the trickblader can perform a lot of the same tricks as a skateboarder, only now you can see them on roller blades.
BMX biking is a completely different sport. These are special bikes with pegs on the wheels for stunts, plus pads where impact is most likely to occur, and there are no front brakes. These bikes are specifically manufactured for racing and stunts, and are mainly used on dirt or specific types of urban setups.
Skateboarding is probably the sport most closely linked to extreme sports. Boarders have been hitting half pipes, grinding and grabbing their boards for quite some time now. In the past, this was mainly associated with being a sport for boys, but many more girls are getting into extreme sports and they're having a great deal of success.
If you watch your kids practising his new extreme sport, you might get a bit scared. When you see your child "getting air" off of a ramp or pipe for the first time, you'll probably be gritting your teach with each landing. However, what's important is for you to make sure they're using the right equipment and they'll be as safe as with any other sport. In fact, a national safety organization's study discovered there are more injuries per participant in hockey, football, basketball and soccer than skateboarding. So stay calm and go along for the ride.
The right safety equipment for your child includes a helmet, elbow pads, and kneepads, all essential for safety's sake. Most skate parks require kids to wear this protection before they're allowed to utilize the property. Falls are a part of any sport, but being properly protected, your child isn't in any more danger than anyone on a football field or basketball court.
The one problem that exists for extreme sport is finding a decent place to practice. A lot of parks no longer allow extreme sports, but kids still need places to jump, grind and try out new stunts. A solution many cities are starting to adopt is building extreme sport skate parks. These facilities provide ramps, half pipes, and even stairs and rails so kids can jump, grind, and get air to their heart's content away from traffic and pedestrians which makes it much safer and probably much more fun for the kids.
If you're paying attention, you'll probably understand that extreme sports are now the wave of the future. As a parent, you may not always appreciate or understand these new types of sports your kids are getting into, but be assured they're both active and healthy sports. It helps if you support your kids and allow them to compete, but make sure they use the right safety gear and proper facilities and, hey, you never know, maybe some day you'll have a world -class competitor in the family.
