Follow These Tips to Help You Get Your Dirt Bike over Rough Terrain
from: Maxx Sports GuidesRough terrain is a continuing challenge for dirt bike riders. They strive to control their bike's powerful engine as they manoeuvre their machine over a mainly rough course.
This type of riding can be a big challenge even for the most experienced biker.
Here are some dirt biking tips to help you manage rough terrain more easily:
When you start to negotiate rocky terrain, first scan the area and look for the smoothest possible path. As you enter the path, grip the dirt bike with your legs and stand up. This will keep the bike somewhat straight. Don't sit down on the bike's seat. Use a lower gear; second gear is preferable. Don't hesitate to shift into a lower gear if the terrain gets rougher.
Look for Smoothest Line
If the rocks are really rough, your first reaction should be to look at your dirt bike's front fender. This is okay for really rough terrain.
But whenever you can, take your eyes off the front of your bike and look around for the smoothest line. However, if no smooth line is available, go ahead through the path you're negotiating.
Another useful dirt biking tip when going through rocky terrain is to keep your body weight centered most of the time. However, if you encounter bigger rock ledges get over and lean back a little. Accelerate a bit and pull the handle bars back so you won't find yourself going over the handlebar.
Maintain Momentum
Another important dirt biking tip to remember is to keep your momentum. Instinct tells you to stop whenever the rocks become bigger. But if you do, you can stall and tip over. Don't stop or panic.
You'll need momentum to get you through areas where the front end of the bike will drop. You don't want your front end to get stuck in a hole.
Sometimes, you find yourself stalling through a rough spot. Here's a good dirt biking tip to avoid stalling. Your clutch action has to be very smooth. Keep your fingers on the clutch at all times so you can easily pull the clutch when necessary. If there's an obstacle, don't hesitate to give your bike more engine power.
Keep your other finger on the front brake in case you need to stop or slow down the bike quickly.
Of course, all these dirt biking tips won't help if you don't practice them. Practice is the most important tip of all so that you will know your capabilities and your bike's capabilities.
