Hunting Angler Fish for a Change?

from: Maxx Sports Guides

Despite its rather grotesque appearance, angler fish are widely considered as prime catch for its succulent meat that shares similar texture and taste as lobster tails, which explains its namesake -- "poor man's lobster". Some people believe that its virtually impossible to hunt angler fish, as they're known to live in the deep recesses of the ocean. Although this might be true, some types of angler fish also live in shallow waters, which means you can plan to hunt angler fish varieties, after all.

An angler fish may not be one of the fish species people usually land, and may be more often caught by accident. However, if you're set on hunting angler fish to try something new and unique, then go ahead and plan that outdoor excursion with the rest of your fishing buddies.

Finding the right area is critical since angler fish aren't really typical varieties like bass that you can easily spot in most regions. While angler fish can be found all over the world, they're more likely to be spotted in muddy and sandy seabeds with shells and gravel that provide the numerous preys they feed on.

Since angler fish are known to have extremely sharp teeth and overly wide mouth, it's advisable to use a wire rig when hunting angler fish that has a standard flapper rig or paternoster along with a grip lead that will serve as an effective anchor in the bottom. You'll also require a flowing hook trace that's about 3 - 4 feet that allows your bait to move more naturally and freely just over the seabed and providing you with a wider area. It's also sensible to use stronger forged hooks for this particular type of fish.

If you happen to have lady luck smiling down on you and you really catch an angler fish, you can look forward to eating its great meat often used as mock scampi. However, most people simply release it back to the sea, as they don't really relish the thought of eating such a gross looking fish.

It's your call. Whether you decide to let it go or take it home for dinner, be sure to enjoy every minute of your hunting angler fish experience -- it definitely makes every bite more tasty whether its angler fish or not!
