Bass Fishing Lures
from: Maxx Sports GuidesBass fishing with lures is an good alternative to bait fishing. Lures provide many possibilities to attract the bass you want. Some lures are used on top of the water or near the surface while others are heavy and are used to fish deeper. Learning to use lures is one of the tricks of fishing that makes it fun and interesting. Artificial lures are made of many materials the most common are wood, metal and plastic.
Bass fishing can be tricky and difficult at times. The key to bass fishing lures is to be flexible. Have several different colors or styles of each type so you can easily switch -- if the bass aren't interested in one they may be interested in another.
Plugs
These lures are made to look like small baitfish. They're often made to produce different types of wiggles or wobbling action making them more attractive to fish. These plugs are used underwater. For small mouth bass, use a lure that's 2 - 3 inches long. For largemouth bass, try a slightly larger size of 3 - 5 inches long. The size of the lure used is directly proportionate to the size of the fish you're trying to catch and should be similar in size to the fish's natural food.
Top water lures
These lures are used on the surface of the water and are made to imitate insects, flies, frogs, injured minnows, or even mice. Top water lures are used to catch fish when they feed on the surface. Top water fishing can be very exciting because you can see the fish strike the bait. Bass typically feed at the surface in the evenings.
Spinnerbaits
Spinnerbaits use metal blades to make a spinning action underwater. This spinning attracts bass through sound vibrations and by sight. For this reason they work well even in dark or murky water conditions. Spinners are also very easy to use. The blades come in various sizes based on the size fish you want to catch. There are also several styles of blade shapes. Try fishing with several types to find the ones you prefer.
Soft Plastic Lures
The most common of the plastic lures are worms but plastic lures come in many various shapes, sizes and colors. Pre-rigged plastic lures come with the hook built in and are the easiest to use. Soft lures can be used on the surface or under water. They work best in low wind conditions. Some plastic lures are scented to help attract bass.
