Deep Water Bass Fishing Techniques and Lures

from: Maxx Sports Guides

As the water starts to warm up in the summer, there's less oxygen available and the bass fish seek out the cooler, deeper water. This is when bass fishermen need to deploy deep water fishing techniques. Deep-water bass fishing holds its own attraction. However you'll need to be more flexible with techniques and lures. Deep-water bass fishing takes a little more knowledge and skill but it's well worth the effort.

Lures used:

Football Jigs: Football jigs are good for deep-water bass fishing. The weights used are usually between 1/2 - 3/4 of an ounce. They fall to the bottom and bounce and this movement catches the attention of the bass and attracts them. They make a slight sound when they do this which also helps to draw their attention.

Tubes (Texas rigs and Carolina rigs): These are a newer form of lure but are very effective for deep water. The Texas ones consist of a tube, which is weighted and baited with a hook that protrudes at the opening of the tube. A shiny glass bead is also present which will shine and catch the eye of the bass. In addition, it will have a smell that's attractive to bass fish. For a Carolina rig, a 6-inch plastic worm is used at the opening of the tube.

Crankbait: are useful in deeper waters. The heavier they are the deeper they can go and the greater will be the movement when they're retrieved. Larger lipped ones will also produce greater movement.

Spoon Bait: These are metallic bait that will shine as they drop through the water. They will shine through murky water and will catch the bass's eye as they drop.

Suspended Jerkbaits: These are good for deeper waters, as they'll jerk and move just above the bottom of the lake and will attract bedding bass that lurk in the bottom of the lake.

Techniques:

1. Using sonar: this can be useful for finding the bass in deep waters or in a larger area of water.

2. Try to fish in the middle of the lake in warmer months, as this is where the cooler more oxygenated water will be.

3. You'll need a boat for deep-water bass fishing and should choose this carefully. There are many different types of boats but fiberglass is considered the best.

So enjoy yourself as the bass fishing season gets started and have fun using deep water bass fishing techniques.
