Sport Fishing Equipment and Gear

from: Maxx Sports Guides

The fishing equipment you use is an important aspects of fishing, so it isn't a good idea to scrimp on your sport fishing equipment and gear. After all, this is what you need to lure fish into biting so you can reel them in. Cheaper brands may be fine for small children, but, when you're looking for dinner or a prized fish, you'll want to have a much better equipment.

There are many rods and reels available. Your local sporting goods store will try and sell you their basic model. But all fish aren't the same and water conditions are certainly different. Rods, reels and fishing lines all have rates and are geared for specific fish. Consider that -- you won't be able to reel in a 200 pound Marlin with that supermarket $20.00 special. If you try to, it might be a dangerous situation for the rest of crew on your fishing expedition.

Choosing your sport fishing gear depends your budget and the type of fish you're after. A rod and reel are usually the most expensive fishing equipment you'll purchase -- except a boat, of course. The rod and reel will have instructional guidelines that explain the rated test curve, which is how much weight it can withstand. If the rod isn't heavy enough can support a larger fish, you could hurt yourself. Make sure you're using the proper rod for the appropriate type of fish.

Knowing the difference between different types of fishing will also assist you when buying your sport fishing equipment and gear. You wouldn't want to purchase a fly fishing rod unless you're planning to do some fly fish. With fly fishing the "bait" or artificial "fly" is meant to sit on top or just below the surface of the water.

If you're doing some ice fishing, a regular rod and reel won't likely be suitable. The best way to prepare yourself is to do some research as well as speak to experienced fishermen. If you aren't familiar with anyone who fishes, you can always ask questions from fishing dealers online or at your local sporting goods store.

There are a variety of sources for information on equipment fishing gear. You'll find CD's, DVD's and books available to get yourself educated. These may cost you a few dollars, but the experience and advice will definitely save you hours of time.
