The Selection Of Bass Fishing Lures
from: Maxx Sports GuidesIn most parts of the United States, bass fishing is one of the most popular summer sporting activities. Amateurs and professionals alike compete in derbies and tournaments in addition to enjoying bass fishing weekends or daily trips to their favorite lake. Bass fishing is both a strategic sporting event as well as art, which means choosing the correct bass fishing lures you'll be using based on fish behavior, seasonal movements, water conditions and temperature is critical for success.
There are several types of bass fishing lures commonly used in areas bass thrive. There are many types of bass including small and large mouthed bass, stripped and spotted as well as peacock and white bass, and each is fished using different types and sizes of lures. The most common bass fishing lures include:
* Crankbait: these bass fishing lures can be used at any depth of water including very close to the top, mid level as well as deep. Crankbaits might have a lip or be lipless, depending on the depth and the action required. Crankbaits are typically shaped like very thick minnows and their attraction to the fish occurs due to the movement through the water when the lure is brought back or "cranked".
* Swimbaits: These bass fishing lures are very streamlined and sectioned throughout the body to provide a close duplication of the swimming movement of a minnow. They're usually colored like the bait fish in the area so, for most bass fishing, the shad colors are most popular. There can be one single hook, a treble hook or a series of hooks on the swimbait.
* Jerkbaits: Again, minnow shaped, but typically heavier than swimbaits, the jerkbait isn't designed to have a smooth retrieval like other baits, rather they're designed to have irregular movement and action as an injured bait fish would have when moving through the water.
* Topwater baits: These baits are used on the surface of the water. They're moved across the water's surface to attract bass feeding just below the surface. Topbaits may be rattlebaits or buzz baits that actually use the movement through the water to create a sound or vibration, or they can have propellers to make a splashing sound cutting through the surface of the water.
Bass fishing lures can also include worms, live bait and trolling baits. Typically the baits will be brightly colored for fishing in deeper waters and bright conditions, and more naturally colored for fishing in shallower waters and cloudier waters closer into shore.
