Collector Antique Fishing Lures
from: Maxx Sports GuidesMany anglers are moving from the high tech fishing equipment and supplies now available back to the roots of the sport by finding and learning about antique fishing lures. These antique fishing lures truly do have a history, as well as being tried and true tackle that has served many fishermen over the years.
There are also a growing number of anglers and fishing enthusiasts who enjoy collecting antique fishing lures and displaying them in sports and fishing fairs as well as trade shows, and selling them online through websites catering to collectors.
Collectors, whether for display and historical interest or to use as fishing equipment, they usually focus on one or more companies or manufacturers. The favored antique fishing lure companies include Pflueger, Heddon, South Bend, Shakespeare, Jamison, Creek Chubb and Moonlight. There are other smaller manufacturers who are also highly collectable with enthusiasts meeting at conferences and shows all across North America and throughout the world.
Antique fishing lures are considered even more valuable if they're still in their original boxes. Unlike current plastic packaging, these boxes are often beautifully designed and printed, with the history of the lure, date of production and even fishing tips and strategies printed on them. The lures themselves, however, are still very valuable, even if they aren't in their original containers.
When collecting antique fishing lures there are a few key points to consider:
* Estate sales and garage sales are usually great places to discover a rare lure or old tackle box that's been packed away for years. Many people are willing to sell the whole tackle box rather than just the lures.
* If you're planning to get involved in this hobby, be sure to read books, study actual antique fishing lures and learn about how they're valued and appraised within the collectors group.
* Join the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club or other organization and get good background information on how to trade and value antique lures you're able to find and collect.
* If you're planning on using antique lures, be sure you know what they're worth before you decide to use them on your next fishing trip.
Finally, remember that any kind of restoring, tampering, repainting or repairing of the antique fishing lure is likely to reduce it's value. The best advice is to leave them as they are, rather than try to fix them up before they're sold or traded.
