Fish In Tides With Surf Fishing Rods
from: Maxx Sports GuidesSurf fishing rods are longer and stronger than average fishing rods. This is necessary because of the required distance from the shore when surf fishing. The rods are usually about 12 feet long and are made of durable material that can cast heavy lead weights of more than 6 ounces.
Surf fishers usually do their own research about a certain beach before venturing into surf fishing. Due to the changing tides, they'll most likely pick the time of the day when it's high tide so that schools of fish can venture near enough to the shore. They also single out areas where a school of fish can be found since the small fish are usually live bait for the big catch.
Scouting for these areas along the shore line can be done while trekking and the most probable areas along the beach for surf fishing are the rough rocky edges where birds can be seen hovering on the sky scanning for food in the water. After identifying good spots for surf fishing, they ready their gear and prepare the bait for the catch.
There are a number of types of bait for surf fishing but the most effective bait in surf fishing is a live eel. Oftentimes, surf fishers use an artificial eel as bait but this is usually most effective when the surf is rough and fish can get confused whether it's food or not. Still, some surf fishers just use sand fleas or the distant relatives of crabs that live just under the sand surface.
Surf rods are strong enough to withstand the force of a breaking tide. For a durable rod, it must have a heavy-duty reel to bring in the catch. As long as a surfer has a good bait, fishing should never be a problem using surf fishing rods.
