Why Bamboo Fishing Rods are Popular
from: Maxx Sports GuidesBamboo fishing rods are currently one of the most popular types of fishing rods used by fishing enthusiasts. There was a time when fishing rods weren't made from plain bamboo, but were made from a number of hardwood materials such as mahogany or ironwood. So what had made bamboo fishing rods so popular over others?
It isn't easy to make a bamboo fishing rod. A lot of hours of work are required to make a fishing rod made from bamboo culm. A bamboo pole is split into quite small strips. The strips are then glued together into a plank or rod. The rod or cane is fastened using a very fine thread of silk. The cane will then be varnished and the reel and grips are infused into the cane.
The popularity of this type of fishing rod isn't due to the complicated process it requires to create one, it's the material which is strong, inexpensive and easy to procure. The bamboo plant used for fishing rods is the Tonkin Cane. Using this bamboo plant specie for a fishing rod makes the rod strong, yet flexible.
This proves to be very important, especially when the purpose is to craft a long fishing rod. The bamboo plant is also known for its natural straightness and equally spaced nodes along the pole, making it very effective for fishing. It also has a natural resistance to bending and breaking.
There was a time, however, during the mid-twentieth century when an embargo was imposed on Chinese goods entering into the U.S. The shortage of bamboo imports caused a sudden shortage in fishing rods made from bamboo. Only a few hobbyists were able to maintain their making of bamboo fly rods.
Fortunately, bamboo fishing rods maintained their fame and popularity once the embargo was lifted and its popularity isn't going to go away any time soon.
