An artificial fly is usually used to sit on the top of the water waiting for the bite. There are a number of different designs, sizes and shapes for artificial flies. They're designed to look realistic and often fool most people. Some use artificial grasshoppers, dragonflies, marfly and/or stonefly.
Most fly fisher enthusiasts carry a variety of disguises to try out when fly fishing. Some use what resembles a nymph or eggs that rise to the surface to hatch in order to get a bite. In general, the artificial looking eggs sit just below the surface of the water. Many claim that nymph fishing is more productive than on top of the water, but it's certainly more challenging.
Fly fishing can be done in saltwater or freshwater. In fresh water, the catch can be many varieties of fish, but mainly trout or trout. In saltwater there are many other types of marine life that may be the target, such as salmon. Unfortunately, when fly fishing it's impossible to control what will bite. Many fishermen have found themselves with a little surprise as they reel in their catch. In some cases they end up with a chub or beam. Just like any other sport, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.
There are yearly competitions held for fly fishing throughout the world. It's become a very popular sport and many people are very serious about their competitions. There are lots of different insects to choose from and many fishermen find their calling with a particular brand or style. These competitions typically net a decent payout as well as the bragging rights.
Fly fishing is a great sport for the entire family. Campers, families and even children enjoy waiting patiently for a fish to bite. Some enjoy it more because they can actually see what's going on. Since an artificial fly is on top of the water, you can watch as it bobs.
