from: Maxx Sports Guides

Michigan is actually greener than most states in America, with 50% forest and some areas deeply remote. In spite of the urban metro image due to the popularity of the city of Detroit, Michigan is very much green and lush. And, with over 11,000 inland lakes and over 38,000 square miles of Great Lakes boundaries and tributary streams, it's also one of the wettest states.

Northern pike ice fishing in Michigan is a great adventure and a rewarding experience, with several large, well stocked lakes and bays. While some are not often fished, there are others, through an abundance of fish stocks, have became a hot area for ice fishing for northern pike in Michigan. Here are some of the best.

At Munuscong Bay in the Chippewa County, northern pike ice fishing is at its best. Other game species includes walleye, and yellow perch. Drummond Island is another northern pike ice fishing destination. Also in Chippewa County, where there's also walleye, yellow perch, and whitefish. Big Manistique Lake and the South Manistique Lake at the Mackinac County offer northern pike, walleye, and yellow perch. All of these areas are located in eastern Michigan.

In central Michegan, northern pike ice fishing happens on the Au Train Lake in Alger County, where walleye, yellow perch, and rainbow trout are also available. At Munising Bay, also in Auger County, aside from the northern pike, Coho salmon is available, as well as lake trout, burbot and whitefish. Little Bay de Noc at the Delta County offers a even more: walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, splake, whitefish, and burbot.

Horseshoe Lake at the Marquette County is another favorite destination where you'll find yellow perch and blue gill. Since it's one of the favorite ice fishing destinations, cabins, resorts, and outfitters fill the locale. Big Shag Lake at the Marquette County is frequented due to spawns of muskellunges in the area. Northern Pike, walleye, yellow perch, blue gill, rainbow and brown trout are also included in the game species.

The larger lakes often take a long time to harden suitable enough to walk over, however, you can still do ice fishing for northern pike in Michigan. As a rule, always look for smaller and shallower lakes while waiting for the bigger ones to harden. Some species, including northern pikes, are active, even in the winter and smaller fish such as crappies and perch are available in most small lakes in Michigan.
