Walleye Fishing Tools You Should Have

from: Maxx Sports Guides

To fish successfully for walleye, you'll need to use the right tactics as well as the right tools. Walleye don't go gently after you hook them and many an ill-informed angler has lost a potential trophy because he/she lacked the right technique and equipment. Don't let this happen to you. Learn about the types of walleye fishing tools there are and what you should have in your fishing arsenal.

Rods and reels

When looking for rods and reels, mainly consider their construction and quality. These are the basic components of your fishing tools and should be chosen based on the temperament and mood of the walleye.

Look for a flexible rod that allows for medium action if you need to retrieve the fish, you don't have to worry about too much resistance. A good rod should allow you to 'sense' or feel it even if the fish takes a light, short bite.

Get a spinning reel, something that allows for minimum drag. You'll find this extremely helpful when it's time to pull in the fish. Use a thin monofilament line. Depending on the conditions, you'll use 2-lb. to 14-lb. test line, so make sure you have a good selection.

Tools for the end of the line

Sinker, lure or bait are designed to work with your line. Choose those that will attract the fish and maximize your presentation.

The jig is one secret weapon anglers pray walleye never get used to. This is credited for catching some of the biggest and heaviest walleye and you should make sure this is part of your fishing tool set.

Pliers are necessary if you practice catch-and-release. You'll use these to cut the end of the hooks to release the fish. Pliers are also multi-function tools.

Net

A net will help ease the retrieval of the walleye, especially if you catch one you intend to mount. Nets make it easier for you to handle a walleye still determined to battle it out. Due to the net's support, you're less likely to damage the fish.

Cleaning Equipment

The only cleaning equipment you'll want to bring is a good knife or, if you prefer, a fillet knife. This is enough to assist you in cutting and slicing the fish for cooking or for storage.

If you don't want to clean the fish or don't know how, bring a storage box. Walleye usually store well wrapped in wet burlap or newspaper but if you'll be traveling far, store the fish in ice.

Guides

If you're new to the area, you'll need maps, a compass, even a GPS to help you get in and out.
