Choosing the Right Hunting Knives

from: Maxx Sports Guides

Ask a hunting enthusiast what tools are most needed for a successful hunt and dont' be surprised if he says his hunting knives. Though some hunting knives are great for heavy cutting required when cleaning a kill, there are times when a small compact knife is best for performing the menial tasks required while out in the field.

There are several options to consider when choosing a hunting knife best suited for a job. Contrary to popular opinion, a larger knife isn't always best for a hunt. Larger knives can be awkward to handle, require more time to care for and, since most seasoned hunters prefer smaller blades, can say a lot about a hunter's level of practical experience in the field.

Hunting knives are often made of carbon or stainless steel. While each has their benefits, stainless steel blades are the most common. Anyone who prefers a knife that's easy to keep sharp will likely choose a carbon blade. However, note that a carbon blade is more likely to rust than a stainless steel blade. When in the field, it isn't uncommon for knives to come in contact with moisture. This is the reason why so many hunters use stainless steel blades. Even though stainless steel is better at resisting moisture, it's more difficult to keep sharp.

When it comes to hunting knives, there's a choice between a foldable blade or a fixed blade. Fixed blades are sturdier and more reliable for larger projects. These types of blades require a sheath and need to be worn on a belt or carried in a hunter's pack.

Though foldable blades can be quite sturdy, they aren't commonly used as a primary hunting knife. A foldable blade, or pocket knife, likely has other handy tools that also fold out. Many hunters prefer to keep this type of compact knife with them at all times, whether out in the field or out at the grocery store.

Also consider when looking at hunting knives is the shape of the blade, the handle or grip, the butt, thumb spurs or locking liners. A highly recommended method for picking out a good knife is how it feels in your hand. A knife that feels awkward and unwieldy is of no use out in the field.

You should also consider the maintenance and care required. Some knives come with free conditioning oil or sharpening tools when purchased. On average, a guide for proper knife care might be included, showing essential care and sharpening procedures.
