Duck Hunting 101 Basics
from: Maxx Sports GuidesDuck hunting is one of the most popular hunting activities. Many hunters find the marksmanship and skill required for targeting waterfowl in flight an exhilerating challenge. Duck hunting is considered one of the classier types of hunting because of the high set of ethics and standards that go along with this activity.
A seasoned and dignified hunter never shoots at a bird not in flight. A duck hunter hunts strictly for the challenge and never for the thrill of a kill and recognizes what's considered fair game at all times and acts accordingly.
Due to the range of issues and other elements, shotguns are used most often in duck hunting. Hunters participating in the sport have a wide range of choices when it comes to shotguns. While some prefer pump action, others rely on self loaders and many who swear by steel shots.
Each type has its own unique characteristics and comes down to the preference of a hunter. The effectiveness and ability to easily handle a certain type of shotgun is different from one individual to another. Just like any other product, the price range for shotguns covers the spectrum of affordable to high end models with heavier price tags.
With duck hunting, some believe one of the most necessary elements besides a shotgun is decoys. Others insist it isn't the decoys that count but knowing how to use them. Attracting ducks to a particular area can be tricky and therefore certain actions will help make an area, such as a pond, seem like a safe environment to the eye of waterfowl.
Attracting ducks also requires knowing how to use a duck call appropriately. There's a great variety of duck calls available. Many come with manuals or recordings to help hunters learn how to properly use them. Without practice, using a duck call could have the opposite effect of attracting ducks.
Also required for duck hunting is a good hunting blind to camouflage the hunters waiting for their quarry. Hunting blinds can be made of plywood and simple branches or they can be a store bought unit with a camouflage pattern. As with the choice of shotgun and duck calls, this is also a matter of preference. While some blinds can be left year round in a some locations, others are collapsible and can be taken from one location to another. This also means they can be easily and compactly stored in a garage or other space until needed again.
