Supercross Motorcycle Racing and Dirt-bike Racing Similar but Different

from: Maxx Sports Guides

Supercross motorcycle racing is often described as dirt-bike racing. Most fans and riders, however, prefer that it be called supercross motorcycle racing.

The supercross label is preferred to distinguish it from dirt-bike racing, which has a number of different variations.

Dirt-bike racing may sound like an amateurish, backyard activity, but supercross racing is actually a professional sport that has rapidly increased in popularity, especially during the past few years.

If you're a new fan or are unfamiliar with what's involved in supercross racing, you may want to learn more about it.

Learning about the inner workings of supercross racing takes considerable time, especially the racing itself, the equipment needed and the track surfaces.

However, you may be interested only in learning about what's happening with supercross racing on television or during a live supercross motorcycle race. If so, you can get a general overview of how supercross motorcycle racing works in a much shorter time.

Supercross motorcycle racing, as you may already know, involves off-road motorcycles on a man-made track or surface. The track can be compared to an obstacle course because it's usually decked out with amazing jumps, small hills, and many corners.

The goal of a supercross motorcycle race is to make it through the tough course and finish first. This typically takes place in the final feature, often known as the main event.

However, supercross motorcycle racing has more than just the main event. As with many other forms of racing, including professional stockcar racing, supercross motorcycle racing uses qualifying races and heat races.

Qualifying races are often used to determine which supercross racers can participate in the main event. This is important because supercross motorcycle racing is popular with more than just fans. Many men and women wish to become professional supercross racers, so many supercross racing events tend to have a fairly large turnout of riders.

It's not always the case, but most of the time, only a certain number of drivers qualify for each race.

After all of the qualifying races are held, supercross racers take part in heat races. Heat races are sometimes substituted for qualifying races, especially during amateur supercross motorcycle races.

After the field of riders is determined using either heat races or qualifying races, the main event begins. The main event is the best known part of all supercross motorcycle racing events. It often draws in the largest crowds, both in person and with televised events.

As mentioned, some supercross motorcycle racing events are operated in different ways, but all will have a main event. The length of the main event will be left up to the promoters of the race.

Most supercross motorcycle racing main events consist of twenty laps, during which time racers will compete for first place.

However, supercross motorcycle racing differs from most other forms of racing. Supercross motorcycle racers must successfully maneuver a man-made course with numerous jumps, small hills, and other obstacles in their race for first place. This isn't always easy because the racing is often done in close quarters, making it even harder to maneuver around the track.

Reading about supercross motorcycle racing may be interesting, but there's nothing like seeing a supercross motorcycle race in action.

Whether you attend a professional race, a local amateur race, or just watch a race on television, you're sure to become a loyal fan of the sport.
