What is Sports Medicine?

from: Maxx Sports Guides

Sports medicine is a sub-specialty of the medical field, which may seem confusing. Since sports isn't medicine, it's a somewhat misleading term. However, the term actually identifies doctors and other medical staff who practice the treatment and care of athletes and sports related injuries.

Professionals actively involved in sports medicine includes regular doctors, physical therapists, surgeons and even athletic trainers and other similar careers. Sports is a highly competitive field, which means emphasis is often placed on speedy, as well as complete recovery, from sustained injuries. Thus an injury that might normally require 3 months to heal is reduced to 2 months using appropriate sports medicine techniques by a qualified doctor.

Doctors who practice in sports medicine treat both professional and amateur athletes as well as children for the various injuries while playing any imaginable sport. The human body is designed to heal quickly after most injuries if appropriate care and treatment is followed. Sports medicine can often speed up the recovery process. Many sports medical doctors also provide athletes preventive care in order to reduce the occurrence of many typcial injuries.

Sports medical doctors come from many different fields of medicine such as cardiology, orthopedic surgery, biomechanics, pulmonology and many others. The doctor's specialty is often quite focused while most of their patients participate in sports in one capacity or another. The roll of the doctor is usually to work with the athlete to adjust training procedures to reduce the risk of injury while increasing the skill level of the athlete as much as safely possible.

There are some sports medicine doctors who specialize in treating female athletes, while others treat both female and male athletes. Deciding which is the best sports medicine doctor for your needs involves meeting with several doctors in order to find someone you're confident can properly care for your needs.

Working closely with training coaches and other athletic professional's, sports mediccal doctors help athletes achieve their peak performance while maintaining healthy standards in terms of their overall health. Achieving peak sports performance is meaningless if an athlete is constantly getting injured, or if their overall health is neglected.

Athletes don't usually work with just one sports medicine doctor but with a team of doctors within various sub-specialties, such as surgical, dietary, cardiogologist etc. Consulting a single doctor, as opposed to the entire team, would greatly limit the options available for treatment.

Though an entire team is generally used to treat patients in sports medicine, there's often a general care doctor who's given the task of heading the team and sending each patient to specialty doctors as required. It's a proven fact that sports medicine plays a necessary role in keeping participants in sports in tip top shape so each athlete can continue to participate in their chosen sport at their highest level.
